26.8.65 and adjoining farmbuilding
- II
Farmhouse and farmbuildings. Probably late C18 - early C19, altered and
refurbished in mid C19. Exposed local mudstone rubble laid to rough courses with
ashlar quoins and arch heads, secondary brick eaves cornice; stone rubble and
brick stacks with C19 and C20 brick chimney shafts some of which are plastered and
one includes an early bulbous cone chimney pot; slate roofs.
3 ranges of adjoining buildings arranged round farm courtyard. The western range
comprises a former dovecote in centre with farmhouse to right and pigsties to left.
The north range has storerooms and carriageway and south range has small cartshed
at right (west) end, central barn and workshop to left. The farmhouse has 3-room
plan with large projecting end kitchen stack. The other rooms have axial stacks
and there is a 1-room extension to rear. The pigsties occupy 3 former cottages,
two 1-room plan cottages at left end and a 2-room plan cottage between them and the
former dovecote, and served by end and axial stacks. These cottages had an unknown
former function since the wall appears to include 2 large blocked circular holes.
Were these loading hatches? 2 storeys.
West range has-irregular 5:1:3-window front. The pigsties/former cottages have C19
3-light casements most still containing rectangular panes of leaded glass but in
various states of preservation. Windows and 3 doorways have segmental-headed
arches with ashlar voussoirs. The central dovecote breaks forward slightly with
gable surmounted by iron weathervane. Ground floor has plank door and fanlight
with glazing bars and first floor sash with small fixed pane window to left. Both
doorway and sash have round-headed arches of ashlar voussoirs. Farmhouse windows
are all similar round-headed sashes with glazing bars which form a radial pattern
in the upper sashes. Round arch of doorway has a reset stone plaque above
inscribed ECM 1626. Brick eaves cornice with projecting headers emulating dentils.
The cornice breaks through the voussoirs over the farmhouse first floor windows.
Roof is hipped to left and gable-ended to right the other side of the north range.
Rear of farmhouse includes a variety of C19 and C20 casements and another round-
headed sash with brick arch. The extension includes C19 6-panel door and 16-pane
sash.
The north range has full height carriageway at right (east) end. The arch of
sandstone ashlar has plain imposts and an elliptical headed arch with neat
voussoirs and projecting keystone. Between the carriageway and farmhouse the
store is a 5-window front of C19 casements with glazing bars. Outer doorways
contain contemporary C19 plank doors. Doorways and ground floor windows have
segmental arches over with ashlar voussoirs. This range must once have been a
barn since the rear wall includes the stub of a massive beam to the round-house.
Part of the curving wall is reused alongside the carriageway as the side wall for a
series of open-fronted cartsheds. Linhays to right have been much rebuilt and are
not included in the listing.
The south range has low open-fronted 4-bay cartshed recessed between the west range
and barn. Barn has large round-headed doorway slightly right of centre. It is
flanked by narrow ventilators and at left end is a smaller doorway with segmental
head. Brick dentil cornice and roof hipped each end. Adjoining to left is a
workshop, probably stables before. The front has been altered in C20 by insertion
of garage doors at right end, the blocking of a large central doorway and a smaller
left end doorway. The hayloft is in the roof space with a round-headed loading
hatch as a gabled dormer. Roof is gable-ended.
Interiors. No carpentry exposed in farmhouse. Mainly C19 joinery detail.
Dovecote has brick walls containing pigeon holes. Elsewhere plain carpentry detail
and C19 king post trusses throughout, a queen post variant over workshop.
