DOLTON
Buckland Farmhouse

II

Farmhouse. Early C17 with later C17 addition, major C19 remodelling and C20
addition. Rendered cob and rubble walls. Gable-ended asbestos slate roof. 3
rendered brick stacks - one at each gable-end and one axial offset from the ridge.
Plan: originally 3-room-and-through-passage plan, lower end to the right. Hall
stack backs onto the passage, lower room heated by gable-end stack and inner room
unheated. Later in the C17 the house was extended by a further heated room at the
higher end. In the mid C19 the house was considerably remodelled - the passage
widened to form a stairhall and a further passage created along the rear leading
from the hall to the left-hand end room. C20 addition built to rear of centre.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 5-window front of which the left-hand end is
recessed with a C20 3-light casement. Otherwise all mid C19 3-light chamfered
wooden mullion windows. C20 glazed porch to right of centre with mid C19 6-panel
door behind.
Interior: former hall has plastered chamfered ceiling beams. Fireplace in left-
hand end room has chamfered wooden lintel. Otherwise fairly complete C19 joinery
including panelled doors and cupboards, the stairs and arches leading off the
stairhall.
