6/141 Windpump at Brickyard
Farm
- II
Pumping mill to former brick yard. 1873. Brick in header bond, with timber
cap, sails and fittings and cast-iron fittings. Tapering tower
approximately 6 metres in height. Low round-arched doorway to west.
Openings at approximately 2.6 metres for timbers of staging, some still
protruding. Fragments of one pair of sails and tail, mounted on cast-iron
ring which is bolted into timber frame on top of brick tower, remain.
Interior: central vertical pump rod and elements of timber structure remain.
The timbers at the top of the tower are inscribed 'F.L. + M.N. 73', which
when related to documentary evidence suggests a date of 1873. The pump
drained the adjacent clay pipe and discharged water into a ditch several
hundred yards away. Gregory R, East Yorkshire Windmills, 1985.
