Six estate cottages in L-plan block. Circa 1898-1900. By Romaine Walker
for Mr. Robert Hudson of Danesfield and Medmenham Abbey. Lower
storey of whitewashed dressed chalk with ovolo-moulded chalk mullion
windows; upper storey roughcast and whitewashed with wooden bressumer,
part jettied on curved wooden brackets, and wood mullion windows.
Plain tile roofs, elaborately cusped wooden bargeboards and finials,
brick chimneys with 'V' pilasters and off-set heads. Picturesquely
asymmetrical. One storey and attic. Irregular ground floor casements;
attic windows in gables or 2-light gabled dormers; all lights with
leaded glazing. Board and stud doors in moulded and stopped chalk
surrounds with 4-centred arches and carved spandrels. W. wing is of
4 bays with gabled bay to right, lower projecting gable to left, and
external stack to right end. Rear of this wing has M gable with
2 5-light canted oriels to upper storey. Longer N. wing of 7 bays
has projecting gable with oriel window to right, and shallow 2-storey
chalk porch projection in 3rd bay with coped gable, moulded kneelers,
and enlarged first floor window. Rear has lower eaves line and
raking dormers. No.3 retains original board door and flanking 2-light
casements; remainder of rear has C20 extensions.
