8/11 Littleburn Farmhouse

Substantial farmhouse. Probably late C17 with early C18 additions; refronted
in mid C19. Sandstone ashlar front with coursed rubble returns and rear. Welsh
slate roof and rebuilt brick chimneys. Rear wing to left has roof of concrete
ridged tiles. Reversed U-plan with 2 attached rear wings enclosing small yard.

2-storey front has 4 wide bays with ground and first-floor bands. C20 wood
door and 2-pane overlight in second bay. Paired 4-pane sashes in end bays and
blocked window in third bay. Two 6-pane sashes flanked by paired 4-pane sashes
above. Steeply-pitched roof has swept eaves, coped gables, shaped kneelers and
end chimneys. 2-storey, 2-bay rear wing to left has replaced C20 fenestration
and steeply-pitched roof with central ridge chimney. Inner wall, facing yard,
has boarded door in partly-blocked segmental-arched opening. Tall single-storey,
2-bay rear wing to right has boarded door in surround with chamfered, alternating
jambs; wing has steeply-pitched roof.

Interior. C17 chamfered stone doorway,with ogee stops,behind entrance hall.
Early C18 closed-string, dogleg staircase, of 4 flights plus landing rail, has
turned balusters and a ramped handrail. First-floor front passage has high-
quality early C18 2-panel oak panelling with dado rail, cornice and 8-panel
doors in architraves. Similar panelling and early C18 moulded stone chimney-
pieces in right and left front bedrooms. Right bedroom also has 2 walls of late
C17 small, square panelling and a mid C18 cast-iron fire grate. Late C17 8-panel
door to attic. Circa 1900 metalwork includes wall lamps in entrance hall and
firehoods in ground-floor drawing and dining rooms.

Later additions, in yard, against inner wall of right wing are not of special
interest.
