Cow house and bull house. Design by Soane for George Smith, first used
probably at Marlesford, Suffolk in 1783. Sandstone ashlar; graduated
Lakeland slate roofs. Bull House, probably part of same design, of brick.
Curved plan with end and central pavilions, one storey and lofts in the
ends and one very high storey in the centre, linked by one-storey 3-bay
ranges of stalls. Circular bull house behind left range. High, wide
arch with impost bands in central pedimented pavilion; 3 arches in
linking stall ranges; arched openings in ground floor of end pavilions
and square pitching holes above with voussoirs and flat stone sills.
Pyramidal roofs over end pavilions. Bull house has flat stone lintels
and sills, curved in plan to door and to 2 window openings; conical
roof with stone ball finial.
