Hotel, formerly called The George. Early and late C18, with C19 additions.
Colourwashed and plastered brick. Steep pitched clay tile roof, hipped to LH,
half-hipped to RH. Long block fronting road is in 4 distinct sections of
different heights. Variety of projecting blocks to rear. 2-storeyed main
section. 2:1:6 sashes with glazing bars in shallow reveals with segmental
arched heads. Off-centre wide Doric porch in antis with simply moulded
entablature. Part-glazed double doors and sidelights. String course above
both storeys. Plain parapet with brick coping. Above porch is ornamental
wrought iron bracket carrying sign. Slightly projecting LH section, same
height as main section. Apparently of 3 storeys, but top storey is parapet
with blind windows. 2 windows per floor, sashes with glazing bars. String
courses to first and second floors. Brick coping to parapet. 2 storey and
attics RH section. 2 sashes with glazing bars to ground and first floors. 2
box dormers with casements to attic. Central doorway with flat hood on cut
brackets. First floor string course. Adjoining to R is single bay later
block. 2-storeyed but lower, with sashes with glazing bars. 3 multiple ridge
stacks and gable end stack to LH, all of brick.
