Ruins of huge barn with later barn built inside it. C14 barn with C16 barn
built inside it. Coursed rubble stone, some stone dressings, old plain
tile roof to replacement barn. Original barn, when complete, was probably
the largest in Britain, being some 70m long by 33m wide, it was a 7 bay
aisled barn with porches each side of centre bay. What remains is whole of
east gable and north wall, most of west gable, and east part of south wall.
Replacement barn is built within earlier barn, of 1/2 its width and built in
west 4 bays using north wall and west gable, and for east and south walls
stones reused from original barn. On north elevation, facing St Leonards
Grange, has to end bay, that was centre bay of original barn,
buttresses that are remains of porch and large segmental-head doorway with
double door and more double doors in another bay, and on C16 south wall opposite
others. Buttresses between bays on whole of north wall, remains of south
wall and C16 south wall. C16 barn has 1/2-hip on end. Original gables have
tall buttresses high-set pointed lancet, and put-log holes. Roof of C16
barn is queen-strut construction made with timbers of original barn.
