Farmhouse. C16 with C17 additions and C19 alterations. Timber-framed
with brick and wattle-and-daub infill, some brick walling. Sandstone
rubble cellar, tiled roof. Hall with hearth at lower end and 2 bay
service wing, left hand service bay forming cross-wing 2 bays deep;
2 parallel range cross-wings, at upper end of hall, each 2 bays, the
outer wing being a C17 addition. 2 storeys with cellar at upper end.
All elevations have timber-frame replaced by painted brick at ground
floor level with square panelling above except for main and side
elevation of upper cross-wings having close-set vertical studding
throughout. Later cross-wing is slightly jettied, carved bressummer
with billet decoration and console-bracets to main and side elevation.
All windows are C19, mainly 3-light wood mullioned in moulded surrounds
to upper end and metal casements to service end; all with carved canopies
on brackets. All gables have C19 carved bargeboards with finials and
pendants. Main elevation Gabled service bay has ground and first floor
window and planked door; adjoining bay has unadorned ground and first
floor casements; hall has ground floor window and gabled dormer with
window below eaves level, and C19 door with tiled porch in angle with
cross-wing. Both cross-wing gable ends have ground and first floor
windows; central C19 timber-framed tiled porch with part-glazed door.
Brick chimney stacks at service end side elevation with 2 diagonal
shafts, at lower end of hall with 3 diagonal shafts and rising from
ridge of roof bridging cross-wing valley with 4 clustered shafts; all
chimneys have oversailing courses to caps. Right elevation C17 oriel
window on solid moulded bracket to ground floor rear bay. Interior
extensively refitted in C19. Natural spring rises in cellar.
