Farmhouse. Probably late C16 but earlier fabric may be concealed, with C19 and C20
alterations. Rendered stone rubble and cob. Thatch roof with gable ends. Tall
front lateral rendered hall stack with bread oven projection, rendered stack at left
gable end.
Plan: 3-room and through-passage plan, with lower end to left divided axially to
create small rear room. Front room probably originally a parlour, with the dairy at
the upper end beyond the hall. C20 staircase in wide passage. Solid wall partitions
to each side of passage and between hall and dairy; the latter is particularly
massive, a curious anomaly being that, when the C17 panelling was removed
approximately 8 years ago, a fireplace was revealed at the upper end of the hall, the
shaft of the stack being demolished at the same time. The length of the hall
suggests the possibility that we may have once been partitioned at the upper end to
create an inner room in the C16.
Exterior: 2 storeys. 4 window range. C20 fenestration, 2- and 3-light casements.
Early C20 porch with tiled gabled roof and ogee shaped lintel to outer doorway.
Interior: unusual shoulder-headed doorway between hall and inner room with chamfered
surround. Flagstone floor to hall, which has 2 chamfered cross ceiling beams and
bressumer at upper end with hollow step stops. Thin chamfered lintel with straight-
cut stops to hall fireplace which has large brick-lined bread oven. Dairy fittings
and tiled floor largely intact.
Roof: structure entirely replaced in C19. Attached at right angle to rear left end
of the main range is a small wood shed with hipped thatched roof.
