II
Part of almshouses in group of ten. 1913 by Sidney Barnsley under Will of Edwin
Gyde. Dressed squared limestone, concrete tile roof. L-plan, each house with
full-height front gable; No 4 with slightly lower original extension right, twin
gables at back, to Gyde Road. 1½ storeys, 2 or 3-light chamfer-mullion case-
ments, under stopped drips at ground floor, all lacking leading. Good original
plank doors, far left to No 3 and in internal corner to No 4, both to slightly
cambered deep-chamfered surrounds. At back of No 3 a large external stack with
offsets; two ridge stacks to return block. Late C20 gabled porch on right
return to No 4. To back, at road face, various small style light casements in
double gabled front. Interior of No 3 has original doors and chamfered and
stopped beam. One of five pairs in slightly varied designs in the best Cotswold
tradition. (Hyett, F A, Glimpses of the History of Painswick, 1928).
