II

Farmhouse. Probably early C17 with C18 and C19 alterations and additions.
Timber-framed with C19 brick extension. External walls replaced in C18 local red
brick except for 1st floor front. Pantile roof, hipped to east, catslide to rear.
C19 gabled dormers with bargeboards. Chimneys to ridge and west end. Back to
road. Originally a 3-bay central lobby-entry house with rear outshot and lean-to at
each end, it was extended to the west destroying the lean-to on that side. Two
storeys. Yorkshire sashes under flat brick arches. 6-panel door in C20 pedimented
surround in original position. Blocked entrance to west end. 1st floor: 3-bay
frame with close studding and straight braces. Interior: large inglenook fireplace,
studded partition wall with sill plate and rail. Deep, roughly chamfered ceiling
beam. Parts of frame visible. Plan characteristic of C16-C17 Vale of York
timber-framed houses. North Yorkshire and Cleveland Vernacular Buildings Study
Group. No 360. Harrison, B., Hutton, B., Vernacular Houses in North Yorkshire and
Cleveland, 1984, pp 76-77, Fig 4.4.
