west of Studley Lodge

Piers and railings. Mid - late C18 for John and William Aislabie. Ashlar
main piers and plinth, wooden railings and intermediate piers Total length
approximately 40 metres, gates missing, with 3 stone piers to each side of
drive. Stone piers: square in section, approximately 2 metres high with
deep moulded cornice and flat cap. Wooden piers flanking gateway:
approximately 1.5 metres high with pyramidal cap. Wooden pier set half way
between the 2 inner stone piers: slightly shorter than stone piers, with
band, moulded cornice and shallow pyramidal cap. Railings: top and bottom
rails, closely-spaced bars with pyramidal finials. The railings and former
low gate cross the main drive and principal vista of Studley Park from the
obelisk (qv) and Ripon Cathedral. They are the property of the National
Trust. An identical railing crosses the drive to east of Studley Lodge
(qv).
