Farmhouse. Mid C17, altered late C18 - early C19. Coursed rubble, rendered
on front, stone slate and Westmorland slate roofs. 2-storey, 3-bay block
with rear wing of 2 storeys and 3 bays. Quoins, plinth. East front: from
left to right - canted bay window; probable position of blocked doorway; two
4-pane sashes. Three 4-pane sashes to first floor. Corniced gritstone
stacks to ends and main stack to ridge above blocked doorway. Left return:
plinth. Main house: double-chamfered window to ground floor; attic window
of 3 round-headed lights with stepped hood-mould blocked by an inserted
chimney stack. Wing: far right - a 6-panel glazed door in an elaborately-
moulded stone surround with 3 sunk panels on the lintel carrying weathered

To centre, far left and above door are 16-pane sashes in flush-wood frames;
a blocked doorway between windows to left. First floor- to centre and far
left - sashes with glazing bars in flush wood architraves. Blocked single-
and 3-light chamfered mullion windows. Gable coping to left; 2 brick stacks
with cogged shafts on ridge to left of door and far left. Right return:
main block - similar attic window to left return. Rear wing - outshut with
C19 fenestration. Rear: main block - blocked chamfered mullion windows;
rear wing - blocked door with cambered arch. Interior: large cavity to left
of fireplace in main room, east range, may be part of chimney or the lobby
behind blocked doorway. Fine staircase with turned balusters opposite
entrance in rear wing. The report of the North Yorkshire and Cleveland
Vernacular Buildings Study Group concluded that the east wing post-dates the
rear wing, but the dated door surround may have been repositioned when the
building was refenestrated in the late C18 - early C19. NYCVBSG Report No
493, 1978.
