House. Late C18 with C19 and c1970 alterations and extensions. Coursed
squared limestone with gritstone to upper storey, stone slate roof. Quoins.
Square in plan, originally probably single-storey and in Gothick style, the
upper storey added probably late C19 (work done within living memory).
Central 6-panel pointed-arched door in moulded stone surround flanked by
pointed-arched windows with 6-pane casements and interlaced glazing bars in
stone architraves. First-floor band. 2 gabled dormers above with windows
similar to ground floor. Central stack with recessed arched panels,
rendered. Rear: C20 extension incorporating former single-storey stable or
outhouse range. Left return: 3 bays; 2 blocked pointed-arched windows to
right and centre, sash with glazing bars to left. C20 sun lounge far left.
Right return: 3 pointed-arched windows with C20 frames; additional 2-storey
bay with arched double door. The house is close to large fish ponds
associated with the Studley Royal estate, and has traditional associations
with the monks' routeway from Fountains Abbey to Ripon. The route was
incorporated into the Ripon drive from Studley Royal Park (qv) to the Ripon
road in the C18.
