Outbuilding. Late C17 for Thomas Braithwaite. Coursed squared gritstone
rubble, stone slate roof. 2 storeys, 2 bays. Quoins. South side: central
stable door in chamfered quoined surround, shallow 4-centred arch to large
lintel. C18 door far right and a quoined first-floor door reached by
straight flight of stone steps far left. Recessed-chamfered mullion
windows, of one light to left of original entrance, and of 3 lights above
but partially blocked and a 4-pane sash inserted. Shaped kneelers, gable
copings, end stacks. Interior: ground floor, left: large fireplace in plain
stone surround. Ground-floor room partitioned and room to right contains
blacksmith's hearth with bellows intact. First floor: 2 roof trusses, one
original king-post truss and one of reused timbers. The building was
probably a bakehouse built away from the main building because of the fire
risk and is often referred to as an 'oven house' in C17 records. The upper
floor may have been a bothey or sleeping room for servants. In the C18 or
C19 the ground floor was divided for a stable and blacksmiths forge - a
common feature in large farms of that date; the upper floor is also
remembered as the 'schoolroom'.
