House. Late C17 with late C18 - early C19 alterations. Coursed limestone
rubble, C20 pantile roof with 2 eaves courses of stone. 2 storeys with
attic, 3 first-floor windows. Quoins. 6-panel door with overlight in plain
frame to left of centre, with tall window above. Flanking and first-floor
windows are casements of c1960 with stone sills and lintels. Far right:
blocked segmental-arched doorway with window above. Traces of blocked
window on first floor between central and left-hand windows. Kneelers and
ashlar gable coping. Central brick stack. Rear: to far right on each floor
a blocked 5-light double-chamfered mullion and transom window with almost
square reveals. A similar blocked window to left of centre on first floor
is largely obscured by a low 2-storey C19 service range and C20 porch built
at right angles to the main body of the house. Moulded first-floor string
course terminating to left of centre, the left return probably obscured by
an extension of one bay to the main range. Left return: blocked segmental-
arched window to ground and first floors, side-sliding sash with glazing
bars to gable; first-floor string returned from rear. Right return: C20
windows to ground and first floors, 16-pane sash to attic. Interior not
inspected. The mullion and transom windows are said to retain their leaded
lights behind the plaster blocking. The house is on the site of a grange of
the Archbishops of York.
