Commemorative cross. Base of 1837 and cross of 1897. Gritstone. Hexagonal
base raised on 2 low hexagonal steps. Cross approximately 2.14 metres high.
Base inscribed to north: VR; to south: Victoria RI. The late C19 cross
1837 1897
commemorating the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria replaced a medieval High
Cross. Original cross was probably a sanctuary cross of the Church of St Mary,
Lastingham (qv).
