FYLINGDALES RAMSDALE
NZ 90 SW

Ramsdale Cottage

- II
House, 1726 dated on window lintel with initials E.H.M. Raised and extended
early C19 and C20. Older part roughly-squared, unevenly-coursed sandstone;
eaves raised coursed plain at front, snecked at back; extensions snecked.
pantiled roof with stone copings and kneelers, brick stacks. Added right rear
wing forms L-plan. Hearth-passage entry at left. 1½ storeys, 4 bays,
irregular, the right bay an extension. Boarded passage door, with glazed panel,
in left bay; 2-light small-paned casement to left. Fire window under dated
lintel to right of door, then 3 reproduction tripartite windows with central
opening sections. Very irregular upper floor has five 16-pane double sashes,
one side opening, and another of 8 panes. Traces of former mullioned windows in
centre part. 2 windows have roughly-reeded-and-margined lintels, probably early
C19. Old brick stacks at ends of main house, and modern brick stack at right.
Returns show similar reproduction windows, and a French door on the right. Rear
elevation has small old lean-to at extreme right alongside steps to boarded
upper-floor door with glazed panel. Interior: left passage wall removed to
leave passage open to former dairy, now kitchen. Chamfered doorway to house-
place which has inglenook with heck and settle. Old beams in houseplace and
parlour, now run together. Early C19 stick-baluster staircase rises from house-
place. On upper floor tapering large brick chimney is exposed. Modern small
rear lean-to is not of special interest.
