5/126 Baysdale Abbey

Large farmhouse. 1822 dated over door, with C17 altered left part
and slightly later right section; on site of a Cistercian nunnery
located here before 1211.
Coursed rubble; Welsh slate roof with stone ridge, copings and
stacks; one brick stack. 2 storeys. Centre section 5 irregular
bays. 6-panel door with patterned radial fanlight, in panelled
reveal and wood architrave, in second bay. Datestone above with
initials I D 1633, and above that a datestone of 1822 with initials
M.R. Sash windows with glazing bars and projecting sills, some
renewed, except at ground floor right a Yorkshire sash with fixed
upper light. 3-bay right section has more regular stonework and
scattered openings: 3 boarded doors, the central with overlight,
casement to left and 3 replaced sashes with glazing bars above.
Projecting staircase bay at left of main part has a pointed-arched
window with Y-tracery. Older left part is lower and very irregular:
modern glazed door, 2 boarded doors and 2 windows on ground floor;
at first floor left a stair window with interlaced head and a small
Yorkshire sash; at right 2 wide late C20 windows. A set-back bay
at extreme left has an extruded porch with 6-panel door under
gabled hood on brackets. Tudor-arched windows with Y-tracery in
porch and return wall above. Return of set-back part has sash
windows with glazing bars. Long, plain slightly-irregular 14-bay
rear elevation has sash windows with glazing bars, some replaced.
Interior shows 6-panel doors in architraves, chimney-pieces and
Tudor-arched passage, all of early C19 appearance.
