14/06/74 No.1
GV II
Detached cottage. C17 or C18. Painted rubble, thatch roof;
later wings painted brick, with slate roofs. Single depth, 2-
or 3-room plan with heated end rooms.
2 storeys, 2 windows; 2-light early casements with horizontal
bar. 3 plank doors, under slate pentice hoods and in solid
cheeks; to the right of the central door is a 3-light
casement, and above this door, inset to a recess, a small
carved panel with a figure plus children on the remains of a
stone corbel or bracket; the figures could be medieval in
origin. The gables each have a small brick stack, and are
half-hipped. At the right (E) end is a small single light
above a lean-to, with a further range attached to its right.
INTERIOR not inspected.
The building stands well up from the main road (Preston Road)
through the settlement, partly concealed by trees. It was
proably 2 small properties at some stage. The steep pitch of
the roof and scale overall suggest early provenance.
