9/131 Davoncourt Farmhouse
II
House, formerly farmhouse. Circa mid-late C17 with C20 addition. Rendered cob
walls. Hipped thatch roof. C20 rebuilt brick axial stack and C20 shaft at rear.
Plan: 3-room plan with baffle entry in front of axial stack serving left-hand and
central rooms. Right-hand room was apparently of non-domestic or agricultural use.
This was converted and the house extended by a further room at the right-end end in
the later C20. C19 outshut added behind left-hand end.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 5-window front of C20 2 and 3-light casements.
To left of centre is C20 plank door under thatched doorhood on wooden posts.
Interior: the left-hand and central rooms both have chamfered ceiling beams with
run-out stops and open back-to-back fireplaces with similarly decorated wooden
Lintels. The roof trusses are probably original and consist of substantial straight
principals with trenched purlins - collars not visible.
This house is a good example of the baffle entry plan which was an alternative form
found in some parts of Devon from the early C17 onwards.
