Farmhouse. C17, with additions of C18 and alterations of C19 and C20. Slatestone
rubble with granite dressings. Hipped slurried scantle slate roof with ridge tiles.
End stack to right with brick shaft and rear lateral stack with brick shaft. There
is an end stack to left and the front wing has an axial stack with brick shaft.
Plan: 3-room and cross passage plan. The lower end room is to right, heated from an
end stack. The hall is to centre, heated from a rear lateral stack, and the upper
end room is to left, heated from an end stack. There is an outshut behind the lower
end room, probably of C19, and originally a dairy. Circa late C18 a wing was added
to front left, containing one room heated from an axial stack and a stair hall with
entrance at the front; there is also a small inner room in the wing. Attached to the
front and the left side of this wing there is an open-fronted shed, probably of C19.
At the left end there is a single storey outshut, continued to rear left behind the
upper end room. Circa C19, the partition wall between the original entrance passage
and the lower end room was removed, and a rear lateral passage was built along the
rear of the hall; a new rear lateral fireplace was inserted in the hall.
Exterior: 2 storeys, the main range an asymmetrical 3-window front. At first floor
there are three C19 16-pane sashes. Ground floor has two C19 16-pane sashes with
sidelights and doorway to the passage set off-centre to right; this has a chamfered
granite surround with 3-centred arch and 6-panelled C18 door with strap hinges on the
inside. The wing to left is 2-storey; at the inner side there is a C19 4-panelled
and glazed door with cambered stone arch and keystone and C19 hood on posts. At
first floor a C19 16-pane sash. The front gable end of the wing has C19 16-pane sash
with cambered stone arch and projecting keystone at ground floor; C19 16-pane sash at
first floor. Attached to the front end of the wing is an open-fronted shed with two
doorways; this is continued as a lean-to along the left side of the wing. The right
end of the house has a single storey lean-to with C19 2-light 4-pane casement at the
front. This lean-to is continued around the rear of the house, behind the lower end
room, as the dairy, with plank door at the right side and 2-light 4-pane casement at
the rear. The left end of the house has external stack, with 16-pane sash at ground
floor to left and 20-pane sash at first floor to left, of C19. There is a small
single storey lean-to at the right. At the rear, the rear lateral stack is
external, with a window inserted at the base of the stack. There is a single storey
lean-to to right with a window at the inner side. At first floor to right there is a
C20 window.
Interior: The doorway to the cross passage now leads straight into the kitchen.
This has a slate floor and end fireplace with C19 surround and mantel; formerly with
a cloam oven. There is a service stair inserted in the rear of the room, with stick
balusters. The front window has deep splayed reveals. The dairy outshut is to rear
of the kitchen. The rear later corridor contains the rear lateral fireplace from the
original hall, which has an inserted cloam oven, and contains a cupboard with door
with LH hinges. The upper end room has C20 fireplace (rebuilt) and slate floor, the
rear window with a window seat. The central hall has rear lateral fireplace, rebuilt
in C20. In the front wing, the stair hall has tight open-well stair with stick
balusters and rounded handrail. At first floor, the rooms are also partitioned with
a rear lateral corridor.
The roof over the main range is of C18, the principal rafters halved and crossed at
the apex, with two rows of purlins resting on the backs of the principals and collars
pegged to the sides of the principals.
Tregarton Farmhouse was the Medieval residence of the Tregarthen family, which became
extinct in 1503; in the C17 it belonged to the Trevanion family and later was owned
for a time by the Tremaynes of Heligan in St Ewe.
