5/59 Toldavas Farm Cottages
- II

Farmhouse and adjoining cottage. C18 farmhouse remodelled circa mid C19
incorporating reused stone inscribed 1603 EG, and circa mid-C19 cottage. Granite
rubble with granite dressings, including some reused C17 fragments. Slurried scantle
slate roof on farmhouse, asbestos slate on cottage. Brick chimneys over the gable
ends and over the cross party wall.
Plan: Overall L-shaped plan. 3-room plan farmhouse on the left and 2-room plan
cottage on the right. Farmhouse has 2 rooms at the front flanking a lobby and stair,
and a kitchen wing at right angles behind the left-hand side. Cottage has 2 rooms
(parlour left, kitchen right) flanking a lobby and stair. There is a large furze
cupboard at the rear of the kitchen.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Overall 5 window south-east front with 3-window-front farmhouse
on the left and 2-window front cottage on the right. Doorways are approximately
central to the fenestration of each front. C20 doors. Farmhouse has circa early-mid
C19 16-pane sash at first floor right, otherwise later C19 or C20 horned sashes.
Cottage has 3 original 16-pane hornless sashes and one later C19 or C20 sash at first
floor right.
Interior: Both house and cottage have circa mid - C19 carpentry and joinery. The
cottage is virtually unaltered since built and has a C19 cast-iron Cornish range and
Victorian cast-iron grates.
