5/87 Higher Farmhouse

II

Farmhouse: late C16/early C17 with early and later C18 brickwork
facade and some C20 alterations. Partly timber framed, partly
brickwork of 3 phases, bonds and 1 section with purple headers;
all on stone plinth. Composition tile roof and 2 brick chimneys.
H-plan rectangular house with internal cross-passage behind the stack.
2-storey 5-bay front. Gabled end bays have 3-light wooden casements
with applied lattice-leaded glazing below, 2 lights above; all with
flat wedged brick heads. C20 framed and boarded door with similar
head. Right end and rear of gables show timber small framing with
angle bracing of wall plate and truss of tiebeam and 2 diagonal
struts. 2 lattice-leaded casements and a board door with iron strap
hinges.

Interior: timber-framed partition walls, massive central ashlar stack
with chamfered cambered fire beam. Parlour has chamfered and flat
stopped ceiling beam and some C17 wainscotting and a 6-panelled cellar
door.

A typical Mottram estate farm of which Keeper's Close (q.v.) was
another example.
