Monument, 1869, of stone. Square pier, surmounted by spire, has
inscription in gabled arched cusped panel on each side; plain
rectangular base stone. Inscriptions read: HERE LIES INTERRED IN ONE
COFFIN ALL THAT REMAINED OF THE BODIES OF EDWARD COOKE AGED 40 YEARS,
ELIZABETH HIS WIFE AGED 34 YEARS AND THEIR FOUR CHILDREN, ELLEN AGED
7 YEARS, SOPHIA AGED 4 YEARS, EDWARD AGED 2 YEARS AND MARY AGED 6
MONTHS (west); ALSO ELIZABETH SHAW AGED 12 YEARS. ONE ENTIRE FAMILY
BURNT TO DEATH AT THE CONFLAGRATION OF BRIERLY HULME FARM HOUSE, IN
KINDERTON CUM HULME ON THE MORNING OF SUNDAY THE 24TH DAY OF NOVEMBER
1867 (south); "IN THE MIDST OF LIFE WE ARE IN DEATH" (east); ERECTED
BY PUBLIC SUBSCRIPTION AD 1869 (north). The catastrophe is still
remembered locally.
