Market Hall. c1760. For Gilpin Sawrey. Roughcast stone with ashlar
dressings and slate roof. 2 storeys, 4 bays. Ground floor has round-arched
arcade on square piers with plain capital blocks, the arches with keys and
hoodboards, now with infill of entrances and small-paned glazing. lst floor
has paired round-headed windows with keys and sashes with glazing bars,
Central clock face in square architrave dated 1766; lantern on bracket to end.
Bell turret to ridge is square with round arches, pyramidal roof, ball finial
and weather vane with hunting figures. Guilt as part of planned town square,
an unusual feature in a Cumbrian village.
