House. Early C19, with later C19 alterations attributed to John Usher (R.
Wildman, "The House of Usher", Architectural Association Quarterly, Vol. 2 No.
1, Jan. 1970, p 70). Yellow brick, front elevation colour washed. Slate
roof. 5-bays, 2 storeys, articulated into 2 units of 3 and 2 bays with
outbuildings to gable ends, single storeyed to SW, 2 storeyed to NE. LH 3-bay
unit: rustication to quoins and divide with RH unit. Coping to gable end.
First floor sill level string course. 2 projecting bays with french windows
to ground floor, 3 2-light horizontal sashes to first floor, all with glazing
bars. Central Italianate porch with rustication and pediment flanked by
finials. RH 2-bay unit: giant order Ionic pilaster to each end. Similar
projecting bay to ground floor, flanked by fixed lights, 2 horizontal sashes
to first floor, all with glazing bars. Part glazed door to R. Various brick
stacks with moulded cornices. SW outbuilding porch is simplified version of
main one. Decorative dummy archway to otherwise plain rear (Roxton Road)
elevation. Round-headed rusticated red and yellow brick archways, one to
rear, one at right angle to front.
