1888/93 by R. Lofthouse (both Middlesbrough), for H.G. Reid, North Eastern
Daily Gazette. Brick, faced with carved sandstone ashlar. Corniced brick
right end stack and Welsh slate roof on No. 13; roof of No. 11 stripped
down to rafters. 4 storeys and basements. No. 13 Italianate style. 2
wide bays. Ground floor has 4-bay colonnaded centre with alternately round
and square columns, the round with quasi-Composite capitals. Frieze and
bracketed cornice. Slightly-projecting rusticated quoins carried up to
3rd-floor sills. Altered doors and overlights in end bays. Windows, and
basement lights in stall risers, now boarded up. Paired round-headed
windows on first and 2nd floors, Caernarvon-headed 3rd-floor windows, all
slightly recessed behind pilasters, panelled and plain. All glazing
missing. Enriched archivolts and lintels, keyed on 2nd and 3rd floors, and
pilasters. Panelled sill band on 2nd floor; dentilled sill string on 3rd
floor. Panelled pilasters at ends, on 3rd floor. Bracketed eaves cornice
and shallow straight parapet. No. 11 in Northern Renaissance style.
Taller than No. 13; 4 bays with gabled centre. 3-bay ground floor has 3
steps up to end panelled doors with overlights, the left blocked, in
chamfered jambs and enriched pilaster-and-continuous-entablature surrounds.
Wide middle bay has basket-headed 3-light moulded mullioned-and-transomed
window. Altered glazing, now partly boarded over; fluted-keyed archivolt
and richly-carved spandrels with escutcheons, that at right dated 1893.
Upper floors have moulded cross windows in enriched surrounds,
quasi-Composite but for Roman Doric on 3rd floor. Foliate scroll frieze on
first floor. Enriched top entablature under panelled straight parapet with
ball finials at ends. Shaped gable, with similar acroteria, has paired sash
windows in fluted pilaster-and-entablature surrounds with festoons in
frieze. 3 blocked basement windows. Disused and dilapidated at time of
resurvey.
