Bank and manager's house, 1872/73 by G.G. Hoskins (Darlington), for J.
Backhouse and Company,Bankers. Now used as public house. Sandstone ashlar,
Lakeland slate roofs. French Gothic style. Bank: 2-starey, 4-bay entrance
front, with slightly-projecting gabled porch in left end bay. Renewed
double doors under shaped lintel and quatrefoil in pointed overlight, in
surround of 4 moulded orders on responds and pilasters with carved capitals.
Fleur-de-lys finial. Pointed sash windows, in similar surrounds of 2
orders, have enriched battered sills, recessed aprons, and ornate wrought
iron grilles on ground floor. Chamfered plinth; string course between
floors; first-floor sill string; and impost bands, carved on ground floor.
Bracketed eaves cornice and shallow hexagon-ornamented parapet, with moulded
copings, flanking 2 gabled dormers with similar windows, surrounds and
finials. Steeply-pitched hipped French pavilion roofs, with spirelet
finials, and central half-hipped ventilation gablet. Manager's house
adjoining left: 3 storeys, 2 bays, the left projecting and canted. Entered
from bank. Moulded mullioned-and-transomed windows. String courses between
floors. Corbelled eaves cornice. Similar roof, and 3 stacks with octagonal
shafts in groups of 2 and 3. 3-bay left return, the right bay blind. 9-bay
right return of bank has slightly-projecting 2-bay ends. Similar windows,
and porch in right end bay. 6th bay now holds door. 4 similar dormers and
3 ventilation gablets. 3 transverse ridge stacks with ornamented bands and
corbelled projecting battered caps. INTERIOR: altered, but retains ceiling
cornices, and panelled ceiling, in former banking hall, with raised reeded
borders. Occupies important corner site prominent in views from Exchange
Place and Exchange Square.
