TL 0447 ELSTOW THE GREEN

Moot Hall. Circa 1500, with slightly later additional bay. Timber-framed with
red brick infilling. Clay tile roof. Original structure of 4-bay plan, with
one bay added to E gable end. 2-storeys. To N, W and S elevations first floor
is jettied, with brackets, exposed corbels and dragon beams to corners. N
elevation: to the ground floor the 3 westernmost bays each have a 4-centred
doorway with some carving to spandrels and a 2-light casement. Each of these
3 bays originally contained a shop. The 2 eastern bays each have a single-
light casement. First floor has 5 single-light casements, one to each bay.
Windows (all with diamond leading) and doors are C20 replacements. Sprocketed
eaves. S elevation almost identical. E gable end has substantial 2-stage
external chimney stack in red brick. Interior: original block has hall to
first floor, roof with arched-braced tie beams, collars and struts. Scheduled
Ancient Monument.
