Description

SE31NE WALTON SHAY LANE
(north side, off)

3/42 Cottages attached
to north of No 192

II

House and attached cottages, now cottages (unoccupied). Mid C18, 2 builds, with
some early C19 alteration. Hammer-dressed stone to ground floor, orange/red
brick (random bond) to 1st floor, stone slate roof. Two parallel ranges, that to
south longer. 2 storeys. North range of cottages: 4 bays. Ashlar quoins. Outer
bays have doorways with deep lintels, central bays have windows to each floor with
projecting sills, deep lintels to ground floor and wooden lintels to 1st-floor
windows which have small-paned Yorkshire sashes. Central brick ridge stack. House
set-back and extending to right has ashlar quoins, doorway with monolithic lintel
to left of window with small-paned Yorkshire sash; other window above, partly
obscured by northern cottages, indicating the house is earlier than the cottages.
Coped gable with shaped kneelers. 2 stacks to either side of ridge. Rear: ground
floor has 2 doorways with three 4-pane sash windows set between, all with lintels
with false voussoirs in render. 1st floor has large 18-pane window which formerly
lit a taylor's workshop. To right, 2 windows with projecting sills. Coped gables.
Stack set below ridge.

Interior: heavy stop-chamfered spine beams carried on dressed stone columns may
indicate the building was originally timber-framed. One post on padstone survives.
Formerly the workshop of Denton and Son tailors and livery-outfitters, known to
have made the livery for the staff at Chevet Hall (demolished).
