Canal swing bridge. Late C18. By James Brindley and Richard Whitworth (engineers).
Large dressed stone blocks to retaining wall which rises and narrows on north
bank and has quadrant recess on south bank for bridge to swing into. Chain set
in stone to hold bridge on south side. Oak post with contemporary iron latch
(to hold bridge when in use) set inside low hammer-dressed stone wall which rises
to middle where it has been broken through. Iron bridge (much renewed) cantilevered on south bank.
The Act for the Leeds and Liverpool Canal was passed in 1770.
