Hotel, later school, now private house, c1850, Ashlar sandstone and coursed
magnesian limestone walling, Welsh slate roof. 2 storeys, 3 x 3 bays with
central projections on 3 symmetrical facades; 4th side (to east) adjoined by
Nos 269 and 271, High Street (q.v.); in Italianate style. Entrance front;
plinth; channel-rustication to ground floor and to quoin strips at each end,
Stone steps to central part-glazed, double-door beneath triangular hood
flanked by panelled pilasters and side lights; above are 3 round-arched
windows with impost band, blind fanlights over the outer windows, and
rusticated arches each with pointed extrados, Bay 3: 2 casements beneath
sunken-panelled aprons to 3-light, 1st-floor window having narrow 4-pane
sashes under frieze with raised blocks and cornice. Bay 1 has later ground-
floor addition beneath window as bay 3. Bracketed oversailing eaves to
hipped roof with transverse ridge stack to front projection and corniced end
stacks. Rear: rusticated pilasters flank round-arched, central doorway and
windows on each side; above is a corbelled balcony with latticed ashlar
balustrade to 3 windows as front centre. Outer bays each have apron panels
with crosses beneath round-arched, 2-light windows; above are corbelled
oriel-bay windows having blind, latticed apron panels to segmentally-arched
2-light windows beneath friezes with lozenges and cornices. Left return:
ground-floor centre has door on right of window each under fanlight with
glazing bars and round arch. Recessed, segmental-headed 1st-floor windows
linked by sill band; central window has apron panel and is set beneath a
blind window with rusticated round arch on continuous impost string course.
Dummy attic windows to outer bays have panelled aprons and margin glazing.
Central bay is gabled and has apex stack (end stack seen from front) having 2
flues linked by a keyed round arch and by the cornice.
Interior : altered stone staircase; large 1st-floor room across rear has
contemporary fireplace at east end. Built as hotel, baths and assembly rooms
over a natural spring discovered c1850. The hotel company became bankrupt
but the building continued as the Victoria and Albert Bath Hotel until
becoming a lodging house and then a boys' school known as Wharfedale College
(Scott, p.86).
