Description

GRINTON COGDEN MOOR
SE 09 NW
16/20 Peat Store of
Smelting Mill
13.2.73
GV II
Disused peat store. Early C19. Limestone rubble, stone slate roof. Single storey.
4 bays of round-headed archways, the second open, the rest wholly or partly
blocked. In rear elevation, 4 slits possibly part-blocked former peat chutes.
Small window in left end, blocked round-arched opening in right end. Peat was
the fuel used in the lead smelting mill. A year's supply was taken from the moor,
dried, and stored ready for use close to the mill. This is the best preserved
peat store of any lead-smelting mill complex in Swaledale and Wensleydale.
Scheduled as an Ancient Monument.
