Detached house. Late C17 two bay house extended by two bays in the C18. The late C20
extensions to the west and north east are not of special interest. The original
building has two storeys and attics, and the C18 addition to the right (east) is
single storey with attic. It is built of coursed rubble stone with dressed quoins and
a roof of Cotswold stone slate. There are end chimneystacks to the C17 building and a
further end stack to the C18 addition, all of stone. The house was refenestrated in
the late C20.
EXTERIOR: The garden (south) front has C20 2-light casement windows with chamfered
mullions and surrounds under drip moulds and relieving arches to the ground floor.
There are two dormers with casement windows to the roof. An off-centre C20 door and a
2-light and a single casement window occupy the ground floor of the left hand
addition. There is a 2-light casement window in the gable above. At the right hand
end is a single storey lean-to with plank door and to the left a large two storey
late C20 extension which is not of special interest. The north elevation has a
projecting stone-built porch with a pitched roof and a modern door. A re-sited lintel
above the doorway is dated "1679". To the right is a 3-light window at ground floor
and a single window at first floor to the right of the porch. To the left is a C20
extension.
INTERIOR: Two room plan to ground floor. Both rooms have open fireplaces with
chamfered bressumers, one retains a bread oven. It has a single purlin roof structure
with tie beams.
SUMMARY OF IMPORTANCE: Burden Court Cottage is a good example of a late C17 house
with a two bay extension of the C18 or C19 that contributes to the special interest.
The building retains much of its original character and fabric and its plan-form
remains legible.
