Mainly a C16 timber-framed and plastered house with exposed timber framing on the front block. A brick and stone wing extends to the south at the rear. It has some traces of earlier work including stone arches of circa 1380. Two storeys. Five window range on the north front and one window range on the east end. Three-light mullioned and transomed windows with C20 casements with leaded lights. The ground storey was built out in the C18 and the windows are C20, with leaded lights. The doorway has a C18 doorcase with moulded architraves and a flat hood on shaped brackets. A plaque on the front states : "Cromwell House, the residence of Oliver Cromwell from 1636-1647 when collector of Ely Tithes". Roof tiled with a tall C17 brick chimney stack at the rear. The interior has C16 panelling and a stone winder staircase with central newel circa 1450 (now wood covered), A C16 fireplace and the remains of a gallery with an original C15 window.

Also Nos 13 to 29 (odd) 29A Parson's Almshouses & Nos 20, 22, 22A, Nos 24 to 30 (even), Nos 34, 36, 36A, 38 & Nos 40 to 60 (even) form a group with Nos 1 to 5 Downham Road.
