Terrace of almshouses. C18 or earlier, altered in C19. Timber framed, clad
with yellow brick in Flemish bond, ornamented with red brick, roofed with
handmade red clay tiles. Single range of attached cottages facing S, with one
axial stack to left of centre and one at right end. Probably 5 units
originally, 2 combined to form no. 4. Rear extensions. One storey with attics.
No. 2 (at the right end) has 2 C19 casements and 2 more in lean-to dormers.
No. 4 has one C19 horizontal sash of 16 lights, one C19 sash of 12 lights, and
one C19 casement and one C19 horizontal sash of 12 lights in lean-to dormers.
No. 6 has one sash of 16 lights, and one horizontal sash of 12 lights in a
lean-to dormer. No. 8 has one horizontal sash of 12 lights, and one C20
casement in a lean-to dormer. All the ground-floor windows have moulded stone
lintels. 5 identical late C19 4-panel doors, with 2 lights glazed with leaded
coloured glass (no. 4 having 2 doors). 3 late C19 porches (2 double, one single)
with gabled roofs supported on slender turned wooden stanchions. 2 courses of
red brick near top of front elevation. An attractive group with The Old School
House opposite; although windows have been changed at various periods the
original apertures remain undisturbed, and the scale of the present windows
remains consistent with the cottage character of the group.
