House. Early C16, altered in C20. Timber framed, plastered with some exposed
framing at front, roofed with handmade red clay tiles. 3-bay main range facing
NE, shortened by approx. 1 metre at right end, and 2-bay crosswing at left, with
internal chimney stack at junction. C20 single-storey extension behind right
end, and lean-to extension behind main range. C20 porch on right end. 2
storeys. Continuous jetty with 4 plain brackets, all joists exposed, and
moulded bressumer. 2 of the posts have semi-octagonal attached shafts with
moulded capitals. Exposed studding above jetty with 'Suffolk' bracing trenched
to the outside. Moulded bargeboards on crosswing gable. 4 C20 casement windows
on ground floor, 3 on first floor. Roof hipped at right. The interior has
exposed framing throughout, moulded beams and joists above all ground floor
rooms, with foliate carved stops on the beam of the crosswing. 2 moulded mantel
beams. Doorway to the crosswing with 4-centred arched head. Cranked braces to
tiebeams of main range. Edge-halved and bridled scarfs in wallplates. Both
roofs are of crownpost construction. In the main range there has been some
reconstruction where the right end has been shortened. In the crosswing a short
crownpost with axial braces is mounted on a half-height collar, a rare
construction in Essex. RCHM 4.
