Country house in parkland. Late C16, mostly re-built late C18, 'Gothicised' early C19.
South-west wing removed, and south-west front re-modelled in 1958 by Viscount Esher
(Lionel Brett). Brick with some diamond patterning from the older work; stuccoed
dressings. Low pitch slate roof. Formerly H-plan, now rectangular. 3 storeys
and attics. Rendered plinth, moulded cornice, embattled parapet. Octagonal
turrets at the corners, terminating in embattlements rising above parapet level.
Cornice broken forward around turrets. Sash windows with glazing bars and brick arches
under hoodmoulds. Windows on east front are similar but with stuccoed, eared,
architrave frames. Entrance (east) front: Centre section of 3 bays with one bay
projecting wings each side, 'Gothic' entrance loggia across the Whole width of the
centre section: three, 4-centred arched openings and behind a central 2-panelled
entrance door in panelled doorcase with broken pediment over. A blind opening either
side of entrance door painted black with glazing bars painted on. South front of 3
bays. West (garden) front, remodelled in similar style. Interior: C16 wall
panelling in bedrooms on second floor, re-positioned during the C18 rebuilding. In the
bedroom on the north-east corner of the same floor is a blocked round-headed window
from the C16 building. Third bedroom on second floor has cast iron hob fireplace
with hot water tanks, with a marble surround. Bedroom on south-east corner has
marble fireplace with foliage enrichment, reeded pilasters and cornice; centre piece
a basket of flowers and a moulded marble shelf. The first and second bedrooms on the
first floor have C18 wall panelling. Late C18 staircase with plain square newels and
turned balusters; panelled dado. The original staircase and a fine C18 plastered
ceiling in the former drawing room, were removed with the south-west wing. V.C.H.
