BRAMHALL
HALL ROAD
West Lodge
II
One of the lodges to Bramall Hall. 1884, designed by George Faulkner Armitage. Brick with some timber framing, the whole painted and panelled to appear completely frame construction; tiled gable-end roofs. T-shaped plan, and a simplified version of East Lodge; 1½ storeys. Gables with bargeboarding and finials; gable wall with curved herringbone; coved jettying. Close studding with quatrefoils between main rails. 2, 3 and 4-light casement windows with diamond leading under small canopies on shaped brackets. Services and yard contained within brick wall painted to represent timber-framing. The lodge was built when the timber-framed Bramall Hall was restored and the present grounds laid out. Although modest in scale, it is a good example of a small-scale domestic design by an important architect, and contains motifs designed to prepare the visitor for the remarkable Grade I hall.
