Malting Farmhouse and No.275

GV II
Farmhouse. 1771 for Samuel Whitbread (plans and elevations in possession of
occupant) possibly incorporating earlier building. Red brick, with pebbledash
exterior to No. 275. Old clay tile roof, hipped to front block. Main house
L-plan with projecting blocks to N and E corners, 2 storeys and attics.
No.275 is 2-storeyed L-plan, adjoining to SW, forming small courtyard between
the 2 blocks. Front: not quite symmetrical, due to different widths of 2
projecting side bays. Brick bands to first floor and cornice level, stone
coped parapet. Plans show door in central position, but no evidence to
suggest its removal to present position in LH bay. Part glazed door with
geometric glazing bars, in moulded surround, surmounted by pair of plaques
with Whitbread initials, and flat hood with dentil cornice on carved consoles.
1:3:1 casement windows, all with geometric glazing bars and under flat arches.
Dummy windows to first floor centre and to far right ground and first floors.
2 box dormers with casements with glazing bars. NW elevation: large
semicircular 2 storeyed bay to LH. All windows similar to front. Rear
(no.275): mostly 2 and 3-light horizontal sashes with glazing bars. Plank
doors.
