Pair of houses in planned terrace. Mid-late C19. Stucco with
stucco detail; asbestos slate roof with projecting eaves; 2
attic dormers; deep stuccoed end stacks. Double-depth-plan
mirror-image pair, each with 1 room at the front.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys plus attic over basement; symmetrical
4-window front. Original hornless tripartite sash with glazing
bars and consoles to ground floor of No.9 (left), otherwise
C20 windows; No.11 with original 3/6-pane hornless sashes to
2nd floor, otherwise later horned sashes including tripartite
sash to ground floor. Stucco detail includes: channelled
rustication to ground floor with keyed segmental arches to
windows and central pair of pilastered doorways under keyed
round arches; sill strings; pilasters and moulded hoods to
1st-floor openings; moulded architraves and flanking
bolection-moulded panels to 2nd floor, and large console to
stepped eaves on the left. Doorways have plain fanlights and
panelled door to No.11.
INTERIOR: not inspected but likely to be of interest.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: forecourt walls and entrance bridge
surmounted by cast-iron railings with roundel frieze and
spear-head finials.
Included for group value as part of an important group of
terraces and villas by Foulston and his pupil Wightwick on the
Hoe, a scheme which placed Plymouth in the forefront of town
planning in the early/mid C19.
