Pair of houses in planned terrace. Mid/late C19. Stucco with
stucco detail; dry slate roof with projecting eaves; 2 attic
windows; stuccoed end stacks with remnant moulded cornices and
many old clay pots. Double-depth-plan mirror-image pair, each
house with 1 room at the front.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys plus attic over basement; overall
symmetrical 4-window front. No.7 (right) has original hornless
sashes with glazing bars; No.5 has had the glazing bars
removed; tripartite sashes under segmental arches to ground
floor. Other stucco detail includes: key blocks to ground
floor openings; sill strings; pilastered openings with moulded
hoods on consoles to 1st floor; moulded architraves and
flanking bolection-moulded panels to shorter 2nd floor and
large console under stepped eaves on the left. Central pair of
round-arched pilastered doorways and panelled doors with plain
fanlights over.
INTERIOR: not inspected but likely to be of interest.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: forecourt walls and entrance bridge
surmounted by cast-iron railings with roundel frieze and
spear-head finials.
Included as part of an important group of terraces and villas
by Foulston and his pupil Wightwick on the Hoe, a scheme which
placed Plymouth in the forefront of town planning in the
early/mid C19.
