House. Early C17, interior remodelled in 1920s. Coursed rubble sandstone with
sandstone dressings. Stone slate roof with stone coped gables and kneelers.
Three stone ridge stacks and one stone gable end stack, now truncated. Two storeys.
West elevation of seven irregular bays. Chamfered plinth. From left to right -
2-light chamfered mullion window with similar single light window above. Blocked
doorway with dripmould continuing over next two windows. Three 2-light recessed
chamfered mullion windows with two similar windows above. Doorway with chamfered
surround, door with six raised and fielded panels. Single light window above.
Broad gabled bay with on the ground floor a large 2-light chamfered mullion window,
a 2-light recessed chamfered mullion window with dripmould above and a single light
window with recessed and chamfered surround and dripmould above again. To the
right, a 2-light recessed chamfered mullion window with dripmould with similar
2-light window above. C20 garage opening to the right. East elevation of seven
bays with chamfered plinth and string band over the windows and rising over doorways.
Regularly placed 2-light recessed chamfered mullion windows. Four blocked doorways
with chamfered surrounds. Gable ends with 2- and 3-light recessed and chamfered
mullion windows. Interior with massive chamfered beams, measuring 24 inches in
depth by 20 inches. 1920s remodelling with plain oak staircase and plank doors.
The term priory is a misnomer; the house must have been connected with the C17
Sutton Scarsdale Hall. -
