SX 65 SW ERMINGTON
5/261 Thornham Bridge and
icehouse adjoining
north west
II
Bridge carrying track over River Erme and attached icehouse. Bridge dated
1818. Icehouse later C19. Coursed slate rubble with dressed granite voussoirs
to arches and rounded granite coping to parapets. Wide segmental main arch
over stream with smaller round flood arch in east abutment. The pier between
the two arches is partly ashlar and may be the remains of an earlier bridge.
Limestone tablet on the north side over the main arch with inscription and
date 1818. The carriageway is quite narrow and carries what is now a grass
track.
The icehouse attached to the west end of the north side is probably a later
C19 addition ; steps lead down to a narrow passage with a cambered brick
vault and a niche on the north side of the end. The icehouse probably served
Thornham (house), said to have been built in 1796 and extended in late C19.
