1 and 2 Farm Cottages
(Formerly listed as Rock Bottom)
II
Detached cottage, formerly 2. C17 or early C18. Painted rubble, corrugated
asbestos-cement roofing, replacing thatch. A symmetrical-front gabled cottage
set into slope and aeross slope. 2 storeys, 2 windows all C20 replacement; a
3-light casement under 2-light either side of pair of C20 glazed doors, that to
right now blocked internally, on steps and under a propped pent hood with
corrugated asbestos-cement. Truncated pyramidal rubble stack to each gable;
left return has one small casement to first floor, right return 2 small lights,
one under a drip-stone, and a C20 glazed door. Back has one 3-light, roof swept
down over slightly projecting stair turret at lower end; some lean-to work not
of special interest. County insurance Plaque. Interior: spiral stair back,
right with bressumer fire having cloam over, and a deep external recess,
possibly as fuel store. Good spine beam and early joists. Roof not accessible.
The cottage retained its thatch within living memory, remains a good example
of modest vernacular in the hamlet.
