Description

KINGSTON OKENBURY
SX 64 NW
4/31
Okenbury Farmhouse

- II

Farmhouse. Probably C17 with later modifications. Rubble, some rendered, some
slate hung, slate roofs. A proper inspection of this property was not possible,
but it is clearly of historic origin and interest. A long gabled wing set
across the slope runs north-east to south-west; from this at the lower end a
hipped wing runs forward, having on its back, or southerly wall, a large
external stack. A cross passage near the internal angle in the main block seems
likely. Two storeys: the main block on the entrance side has two small 2-light
casements at first floor, and a door near the re-entrant. Projecting wing has
C20 steel windows at each level on the hipped end, and a small 2-light beyond
the stack on the return. The ridge slightly lower than main block. Lower gable
end and return front of long block is slate hung at first floor with four
16-pane sashes; lower fenestration not visible. The gable end has a 2-light
casement above a door which is above the adjacent ground level. Two large ridge
stacks, possibly originally at gables, now extended at either end. Interior
reported to contain exposed ceiling beams, a blocked arched fireplace, late
Georgian staircase, and a kitchen with 2 hearths and 2 butter-wells, which are
characteristic of this area. The low roof pitches suggest that the roof
structures have been altered in the C19. Okenbury was formerly in Ringmore
Civil Parish.
