The Farriers
26.1.67 (formerly listed as part
of The Forge)
GV II
Cottage. Possibly C16 origins, some evidence for C17 plan, mainly C19 or C20
fabric. Rendered cob or rubble, thatched roof. Broad block parallel with
street originally two or 3-room cross passage, long back wing, right added C18
or early C19. Two storeys: ground floor has C20 door to thatched hood, left,
then 2-light and single casement; to right a thatched quadrant of mid C20, and a
3-light in slated lean-to running out to street edge. First floor has 2-light
and a single light. Large gable stacks, stepped. Long back wing is in 2
storeys, with various 2-light glazing-bar casements to wood lintols, and 2 to
eyebrows. Good C19 door in peaked head. Interior of main block has stone
spiral stair left of entry, deep chamfered and stopped beam, stone overmantel to
chamfered edge. End room, right with new bressumer fireplace; a blind opening
to former back wall. Top right bedroom has a blocked gable window. Roof
structure not inspected. The Kingston History Society booklet (Kingston: A
South Hams Village, 1980) has a photograph (p.20) showing a central door, and
different fenestration; the quadrant had not then been added. A fine building
holding an important position visually in the settlement.
