- Walland Farmhouse
- II
Farmhouse, now private dwelling. Probably early C16 origins, remodelled in early
C17 with C20 alterations. Stone rubble, rendered cob to upper storey. Concrete
tiled roof with gable ends. Axial stone rubble stack.
3-room, probably originally open hall, house plan, the stack inserted to form
unusually a lobby entry. The stack has back-to-back fireplaces (also unusual in
early Devon houses) heating hall and room to right at upper end, the latter with
projecting stair turret to rear, the staircase removed in C20. The inner room,
beyond the hall but at the lower end, also contains a staircase running up beside
the rear wall, the hall/inner room partition having been removed.
2 storeys. 5-window range. C20 fenestration, 2-light casements. C20 porch with
reused ovolo-moulded timber lintel. 6-panelled door. French windows to left.
Stone drip to right-hand end window. C20 flat-roofed extension to rear.
Interior: Largely altered in C20 but retains some C18/early C19 panelled doors.
Ovolo-moulded hall fireplace lintel. 4-phase roof structure with some reused smoke-
blackened purlins over the upper end suggesting former open hall house, single C17
truss with trenched purlins over lower end, the 3 remaining trusses replaced in C18
or early C19 and superimposed late C20 roof.
